About
Us
People with intellectual
and developmental disability may have a reduced ability to learn
and function within society. However, we believe that with appropriate
support and training, they can acquire many skills and participate
to a large extent in family and community life.
The SAI-i AC
• Provides services for individuals
with autism, so as to maximize their potential and help to improve
the quality of their lives.
• Ensures that every person
has the opportunity to live a life of dignity to his or her fullest
potential within society.
The center is part of Sunlove Abode
for Intellectually-Infirmed Ltd., which is a registered charitable
organization. The center started functioning in January 2003.
Why the Need?
People with disabilities and their families have needs which are
both similar and different from those of other able-bodied persons.
Some can lead normal lives with some adjustments, while others need
a higher level of care and assistance. The care and welfare of people
with disabilities is everyone's concern. Families need services
based on their particular needs.
Few families of individuals with autism know what to expect as their
children grow older. Many parents dread the onset of adolescence,
fearing that this is certain to bring increased difficulties. Almost
all parents worry about the degree of independence that can ever
be attained, or the ability of their child to cope when they are
no longer there to care for them.
In Singapore, the autism related services have expanded and improved
in quality in the past few decades. Many services are available
for infants and children with autism, but as they grow older there
is a steep decline in the options available for them - especially
for individuals with high support needs who exhibit challenging
behavior. A considerable number of them, in their adolescence years,
have no option but to remain at home till they can be enrolled in
homes for the elderly. The SAI-i Autism Center was set up to meet
the needs of these individuals.
